Let’s find out more about Ntombizini.

Tell us about your role at Mukuru?

I’m a Verifications Officer. I follow the KYC process with new customers. This means that every time someone signs up with Mukuru, I ensure that they have the necessary documents required to send money to their families. We have different levels of KYC, and this depends on the amounts that the customers would like to send. I also ensure that duplicate accounts are merged into one.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the fact that when l started l didn’t even know how to use a PC, but my team showed me the ropes.  We encourage each other. Since l have been at Mukuru I’m more confident.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Umtata in the Eastern Cape. In 2017, I decided to move to Cape Town with my three children to find better opportunities. Most of my friends thought I was silly to find work at the age of 40. They thought that I wouldn’t find work in Cape Town but I took the chance. I am glad I did. I don’t regret making the move because it’s given me the opportunity to change my life for the better.

What do you like about working at Mukuru?

I was welcomed into the Mukuru family in such a warm way. It is a friendly environment where you’re encouraged to be the best that you can be. When I started at Mukuru I was impressed by the wonderful way in which everyone interacted with each other. While I was in the kitchen doing my tasks, my colleagues would rope me in to learn about verifications and later encouraged me to apply for verifications posts. I applied and landed the job but I wasn’t clued up on using a computer. That wasn’t a problem because everything I know about computers I learned from my colleagues. They are very patient and I can always count on them for guidance. Mukuru has helped me grow professionally and personally. It’s a wonderful place to learn and grow. Working at Mukuru has built up my confidence and l love the job l am doing .

What are your future career plans?

I’m excited to achieve more. At Mukuru there’s so much to learn and there’s always an opportunity to gain new skills or improve in a particular area. I believe that with the support that I am given I can acquire more skills. In fact, I am looking at taking up courses very soon.

Do you prefer working from home?

I enjoy working from home. My children are older now so they understand that I have set working hours and they know when I take my lunch. I simply close my bedroom door and start working with very few disruptions during the day. I juggle many responsibilities such as helping my youngest with homework but I have found a way to manage every day. It is also important for me to take care of my health because it impacts every other aspect of my life. When I keep fit and healthy I am able to maintain a good standard of working. It also really helps that my eldest son is a good cook and loves doing his chores!

What are the biggest challenges you face in your job and how do you solve or overcome these?

It’s a high paced environment and can be challenging when you learn a new thing everyday. It can be stressful, but I take it upon myself to learn every new thing until l master it.

How do you live out the Mukuru mission in your job?

I work hard. I am able to deliver the best that I possibly can. My personal values are to be brave and to go for what you want. I think that’s what Mukuru is all about. I’ve taken a leap of faith in my professional journey and I’m giving it all I have. At Mukuru we’re brave and we make a difference. That’s how I try to live my life, every day.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a career at Mukuru?

It’s the right place to be. We can learn and grow, and your workmates are great to work with, not just my team, but people in all the other departments as well. The whole Mukuru company has a great culture even though we are different cultures but when we are at Mukuru we are all Mukuru.
