Mukuru Airtime Advance – Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) create a binding agreement between you and Mukuru Financial Services (Pty) Ltd (“Mukuru”). They apply only to the optional Airtime Advance Service (“Service”) and do not replace the Mukuru Card Terms & Conditions, which continue to govern your Card. By requesting an Airtime Advance you accept these Terms in full.

  1. About the Airtime Advance Service
    1. The Airtime Advance (“Advance”) lets Eligible Customers receive a small, instant airtime top-up on their mobile number.
    2. The Advance is pre-paid access to airtime, the value of which is:
      1. delivered within 15 minutes after you place the order; and
      2. deducted automatically (together with the Service Fee) on the earlier of (a) the moment you next load any value onto your Mukuru Card after receiving the Advance, or (b) the 30th calendar day after the Advance.
    3. A single, fixed Service Fee is charged for each Advance. The fee does not change over time and is disclosed before you confirm the request.
    4. The Service is entirely optional, and you may opt-in to use it (via USSD, WhatsApp or the Mukuru app).
    5. Your personal information is processed in line with Mukuru’s Privacy Notice, which forms part of these Terms by reference.
  2. Key Words
    TermMeaning
    Advance AmountThe Rand value of airtime issued to you under these Terms.
    Service FeeThe fixed fee charged by Mukuru for issuing each Advance (currently R1.10 per R10 advanced).
    Payment Automatic deduction of the Advance Amount plus Service Fee from the next load onto your Card or any balance later available.
    Eligible Customer A verified Mukuru Card holder who meets the criteria in clause 3.1.
  3. Eligibility and Sign-Up
    1. You may request an Advance only if, at the time of request, you:
      1. hold an active Mukuru Card;
      2. have completed all of the required ID checks for your Mukuru Card;
      3. have made at least one Mukuru Card transaction each month for the past three months; and
      4. do not have any unpaid Airtime Advances outstanding.
    2. Mukuru may refuse or withdraw access to the Service at any time for regulatory, risk-management or operational reasons.
  4. Requesting an Advance
    1. You may request an Advance through USSD, WhatsApp or any channel Mukuru makes available.
    2. You will see the Advance Amount, applicable Service Fee and total Payment upfront. By confirming, you instruct Mukuru to issue the airtime immediately and to collect the Payment automatically.
    3. You can only have one active Advance at a time.
    4. Advance Amounts range from R10 up to R100, in increments determined by Mukuru based on your prior successful payment history.
  5. Service Fee and Payment
    1. The Service Fee is a flat charge for providing immediate airtime. It is not interest and does not increase over time.
    2. Payment by you for the Advance happens automatically when you next load funds onto your Mukuru Card. If the amount you load onto your Mukur Card is insufficient to cover the amount of the Advance, Mukuru will deduct the available funds on your Mukuru Card as part payment towards the Advance and deduct the remaining amount that makes up the Advance from subsequent loads until the Payment for the Advance is complete.
    3. If you have not loaded any funds onto your Mukuru Card within 30 days after receiving the Advance, Mukuru will, on the 30th day, trigger the same repayment process set out in clause 5.2. Any amount available on your Mukuru Card that day will be applied first, and the balance (if any) will be collected automatically from the first and each subsequent value you load until the Payment is settled in full, with no extra fees or interest.
  6. Limits and Usage
    1. Advance airtime can be used for standard mobile services (voice, SMS, data, bundles) on participating networks. It cannot be withdrawn as cash, transferred to another wallet or used for any illegal purpose.
    2. Mukuru may set daily, monthly or per-customer limits and may change those limits with notice on its website or via SMS.
  7. Notifications
    1. You will receive an SMS confirming each Advance and each Payment deduction.
    2. Usage and balance notifications for your Mukuru Card continue to apply.
  8. Non-payment and Suspension
    1. Failure to repay an Advance within 30 days will not attract penalty fees or interest, but Mukuru may suspend your ability to obtain further Advances.
  9. Liability and Responsibility
    1. Mukuru is not liable for loss arising from:
      1. network or system failures beyond its control;
      2. your provision of incorrect information;

      4. your breach of these Terms.
    2. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability for fraud or gross negligence by Mukuru.
  10. Changes & Termination
    1. Mukuru may amend these Terms by giving you at least 7 days’ notice (posted on www.mukuru.com or via SMS). Continued use of the Service after the notice period means you accept the changes.
    2. Mukuru may terminate or suspend the Service on reasonable notice, or immediately where required for legal or security reasons.
  11. General
    1. A failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of rights.
